It was surprising how people all of a sudden greeted “Happy Birthday Bangladesh” this year!

From facebook status to SMS to emails and personal conversations, people began to greet each other on “Bangladesh’s Birthday” this year. A real-estate agent even had a big commercial printed on Prothom Alo (page 9, 16 Dec) where the headline says “today is Bangladesh’s Birthday”.

Perhaps, having a birthday for a nation adds fun to the celebration, and is catchy for the young generations. May be it is good for Azad Products, Archie’s and Hallmarks as well.

But calling 16 December the “Birthday of Bangladesh”—innocently, emotionally or unknowingly— can have a far reaching negative consequence for our history! At a time when Bangladesh is getting prepared to try the war criminals, this confusion can be detrimental to the trial of War Criminals. This post will try to answer some misconceptions about the birth of Bangladesh.

মাটির গর্তে বুক পর্যন্ত দাড়িয়ে থাকা ছোট্ট পাপী মেয়েটি ব্যাকুল হয়ে চিৎকার করে চলছিল “আমি আর বলবো না… আমি আর বলবো না… আমাকে মাফ করে দাও … আমি আর বলবো না…” সমাজকে নিষ্কলুষ আর পাপমুক্ত রাখতে বদ্ধপরিকর ধর্মপতিদের হাত থেকে তখন অবিরাম ছুটে আসছে পাথর… ছোট পাথর, বড় পাথর, গোল পাথর, এবড়ো-থেবড়ো পাথর… পাথরগুলো ছুটে যাচ্ছে মেয়েটার চোখ-মুখ-মাথা লক্ষ্য করে। একটা-দুটো বেয়াড়া পাথর অবশ্য টার্গেট মিস করছে, তাতে ছোট্ট পাপী মেয়েটির মরণক্ষণ সামান্য দীর্ঘায়িত হচ্ছে মাত্র। কিন্তু কষ্ট হচ্ছে ধর্মরক্ষকদের। তাদেরকে আবার নিচু হয়ে নতুন পাথর তুলে মেয়েটার মুখ নিশানা করে সবেগে ছুড়ে মারতে হচ্ছে! কী যন্ত্রনা! মাত্র তের বছরের একটা মেয়ের মরতে এতো সময় লাগবে কেন?

আলজাজিরার খবর অনুযায়ী সোমালিয়াবাসি মেয়েটার নাম আয়েশা। পুরো নাম আয়েশা ইব্রাহীম দুহুলো। ধরেই নেয়া যায় মুসলিম পরিবারে জন্ম নেয়া মেয়েটির নাম রাখা হয়েছিল আল্লাহর নবীর প্রিয়তম স্ত্রী আয়েশা (রা) এর নাম অনুসরণে। একদিন এই সোমালিয়াবাসি আয়েশা হেটে হেটে যাচ্ছিল মোগাদিসু নামক স্থানে তার দাদী বা নানীর বাসায় । পথিমধ্যে তিনজন লোক তাকে জোরপূর্বক … ওই ঘটনায় মেয়েটি স্বর্বস্ব: হারিয়েছিল এটা বলা ভুল হবে। কারন ওই ঘটনায় মেয়েটি জীবনাটাতো আর হারায়নি। মেয়েটি আসলে স্বর্বস্ব: হারিয়েছে যখন সে এই ঘটনার নালিশ জানাতে গিয়েছে কর্তৃপক্ষের কাছে।

Hitler’s Mein Kampf and a BBC report

My friend forward this BBC article the other day and wrote-

“This is really damaging. Somebody please write a blog post about the BBC’s constant hammering at bad stories about BD.”

I was not too sure about that. I mean, Hitler and Bangladesh… really? Who will buy that? But my friend continued-

“In the current environment, nothing can be more damaging to Bangladesh than a stray article that links Bangladesh+Hitler which will read in those so-called defense analysts’s mind to anti-Semitism+terrorist. None of those analysts who track “countries” will think in the way that we are doing, nor will they have access to any nuanced analysis. They will read this article and that’s all they will read.”

Hmm, he has a point. So I read the article one more time. Frankly speaking, the title of the article is very misleading and doesn’t even reflect the theme of the very article. The title was a cheap effort to catch readers’ eye. It’s true that everywhere around the world there are few people who respect warlords and dictators. You can find pro-Hitler books anywhere (probably in Asia too). But the sale of street-books in Dhaka city is a different case altogether.

একাত্তরের ছবি

মাথার মধ্যে সম্ভবত: পানি ঢুকে গিয়েছে, তাই মনে হয় শুধু পানির ছবি তুলি। বিজয়ের মাসে তাই কিছু ছবি তুললাম একাত্তরকে মাথায় রেখে। আগেই বলে রাখি, অধিকাংশ পানির আকৃতিই কিন্তু পূর্বপরিকল্পনা মতো করা নয় (সম্ভবও নয়)| বরং শ’খানেক ছবি তোলার পর তার খেকে কাহিনীর প্রয়োজন মতো কিছু ছবি বেছে নিয়ে করা এই পোস্ট।

যদিও পানির ফোটার সাথে সেকেন্ড মিলিয়ে ক্যামেরা ক্লিক করতে অনেক কসরৎ করতে হয়, তবুও সয়ংক্রীয় যন্ত্রের চেয়ে যারা হাতুড়ে মাধ্যমে ছবি তুলেন, তাদের ছবিই বেশি আকর্ষনীয় আর “স্বাভাবিক” মনে হয় আমার কাছে। সেই হাতুড়ে ছবিয়ালদের অনুসরণ করেই এই ছবিগুলো তোলা।

পানির আকৃতি-রঙ কোন কিছুতেই ফটোশপের কৃতীত্ব নেই। তবে ছবির color contrast, ছবিতে আমার সাক্ষর আর ‘প্রায় অদৃশ্যমান’ নামের জলছাপ ফটোশপেই ঠিক করা। মুলত: পানিপূর্ণ প্লেটে বিভিন্ন রঙ আর কাগজ কেটে বানানো মানচিত্র রেখে তার উপর পানির ফোটা ছেড়ে তোলা হয়েছে ছবিগুলো।
